Heart Health Program Greensboro: Small Steps for a Stronger Heart
Most people don't come to us because of a number on a chart. They come because they got winded on the stairs at work and it embarrassed them. Because a parent had a scare. Because a doctor said the words “let's keep an eye on this” and they went home and couldn't stop thinking about it.
If that's you, you're in the right place. The Heart Health Program at One Wellness Center in Greensboro is built for the space between “nothing's wrong” and “something's wrong” the long stretch where what you do most days matters more than anything else. We're not here to overhaul your life in a weekend. We're here to help you change a few things and actually keep them.

Why heart health looks different up close
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, according to the CDC. That's a sentence everyone has heard, and it's so big it stops meaning anything. Up close, at the level of one person in one week, heart health looks a lot less dramatic. It looks like whether you walked. Whether you slept. Whether dinner came from a drive-through three nights running because work was brutal and nobody had it in them to cook.
That's the level we work at. Not because the big picture doesn't matter, but because the big picture is made entirely out of ordinary weeks. If we can help you make your ordinary week a little better and keep it that way when life gets loud the rest follows.
It's also worth saying plainly: this is a wellness program, not medical treatment. We don't diagnose, we don't prescribe, and we don't replace your physician. What we do is help you build the daily habits your physician has probably already told you to build, with someone in your corner while you do it.
What the program is really about
Habits, mostly. Boring, unglamorous, repeatable habits.
Almost everyone who walks through our door already knows what they're “supposed” to do. Move more. Eat better. Stress less. Sleep. Nobody needs another lecture on that. What's missing is rarely information; it's a plan that fits an actual life, and someone who notices when you fall off it.
So the program is built around three things working together, because they don't work well apart:
• Movement that matches where your body is today, not where it was ten years ago
• Nutrition that adjusts what you already eat instead of replacing it with food you’ll resent
• Mental health support, because stress isn’t a side topic in heart health, it’s part of the conversation
You'll notice there's no meal plan to memorise and no six-week transformation promise. That's on purpose. The people who get the most out of this program aren't the ones who go hardest in week one. They're the ones still showing up in month seven.
What the Heart Health Program Greensboro residents join actually includes

Movement that meets you where you are
Your first session isn't a workout. It's a conversation and a baseline what you can do comfortably right now, what hurts, what you've tried before, what you flat-out hate doing. We build from there.
For some people that starts with a ten-minute walk and some seated strength work. For others it’s our Heart Smart Circuit group class: 45 minutes, twice a week, resistance bands and body weight, everything scaled to the person doing it. Same room, different intensities, nobody left behind.
And if you're managing joint pain, recovering from an event, or working around a chronic condition, tell us. Programming gets built around it. That's the whole point of doing this with a clinical exercise professional rather than a generic gym plan.
Nutrition without the guilt
We don't hand out a list of forbidden foods. We start with what you actually eat in a normal week including the takeout, the sweet tea, and look for the small swaps that add up without making you miserable.
That might mean adding a vegetable rather than removing a carb. Cooking two extra portions on Sunday so Wednesday has a plan. Learning what a reasonable portion of the food you already love looks like on your own plate. Reading a sodium label once, properly, so you never have to think about it that hard again.

Our nutrition guidance is practical and Greensboro-specific. We’ll talk about what’s actually available at the stores you shop at, what a family of four can afford, and how to eat well when your schedule is genuinely difficult.
Support for the mental side, too
Here’s the part most fitness programs skip. Chronic stress, poor sleep, anxiety, grief, burnout; these aren’t separate from your heart. They shape your blood pressure, your sleep, your appetite, whether you have anything left at 6pm to go for that walk.
Because our mental health services live under the same roof, you don’t have to explain your situation twice to two different offices that never speak to each other. If the thing standing between you and a healthier routine is that you’re exhausted and overwhelmed, that’s a real obstacle and it deserves real support.
Check-ins that show you the change
Motivation fades. Evidence doesn't. So we track a handful of simple markers over time like how you're moving, how you're feeling, how the routine is holding up, and we sit down with you to look at them.
This matters more than it sounds. Progress in heart health is slow and quiet, and it’s very easy to conclude nothing is working when in fact everything is. Seeing your own numbers move, even a little, is often what carries people through month three.
The eight things that actually move heart health
The American Heart Association groups cardiovascular health into eight areas, and it’s a useful map because it shows how much of this is daily behaviour rather than fate:
1. Physical activity — how much you move in a normal week
2. Diet — the overall pattern, not any single meal
3. Sleep — quantity and quality, and the most commonly ignored one
4. Nicotine exposure — including vaping and secondhand smoke
5. Body weight — one marker among several, not a moral scorecard
6. Blood pressure
7. Blood lipids (cholesterol)
8. Blood glucose
The last three are managed with your physician. The first five are lifestyle, and that’s where we work. Our job is to make the first five as achievable as possible so that when you next see your doctor, you’ve given yourself the best shot.
If you’re already working with a cardiologist or primary care provider, bring what they’ve told you. We’d rather build around their guidance than beside it.
After that it’s a rhythm: sessions, adjustments, periodic check-ins. Some people stay in group classes indefinitely. Some move to one-on-one wellness coaching. Some do both. There’s no graduation date, because habits don’t have one.
Who this is for
This program tends to fit you if:
• Your doctor has mentioned blood pressure, cholesterol, or blood sugar and you’d like to do something about it
• Heart problems run in your family and you’d rather get ahead of it
• You’ve been cleared to exercise after a cardiac event and want supervision, not a crowded gym
• You haven’t exercised in years and the idea of walking into a gym alone is a non-starter
• You’ve started over more times than you can count and want to try it with support this time
It’s probably not the right fit if you’re looking for rapid weight loss, a competitive training program, or emergency medical care. If something feels urgent like chest pain, shortness of breath at rest, dizziness, call your doctor or 911. Please don’t book a consultation and wait.
What it costs, and how to pay for it
Why people stay
Straightforward, because nobody likes chasing pricing around a website:
• Initial consultation: free
• Group classes: $15 per class
• One-on-one coaching: insurance is accepted; coverage varies by plan, so ask when you call and we’ll help you check
• Packages and memberships: see our memberships & pricing page for current options
Ask around and you’ll hear a version of the same three things.
Nobody makes them feel bad. No weigh-in theatre, no lecture about the weekend, no tone. You get met where you are, every time, including the weeks you didn’t do what you said you would.
It’s the same people. You’re not reintroducing yourself to a new trainer every month. The person guiding your sessions knows your knee, knows your work schedule, knows you’re travelling in October.
It fits. The plan bends around real life like night shifts, caregiving, bad weeks instead of collapsing the moment life stops cooperating.

Is this the same as cardiac rehab?
No. Cardiac rehabilitation is a medical service delivered through a healthcare provider, usually after a cardiac event. Our Heart Health Program is a wellness program focused on daily habits — movement, nutrition, and stress. Many people do it after completing rehab, or alongside care from their own physician.
What should I bring to my first visit?
Comfortable clothes and shoes you can move in, water, and any guidance your doctor has given you. That’s it.
How long before I notice a difference?
